Artificial intelligence is an increasingly present computer system in our lives. Its use makes people argue about the risks involved, but it also has advantages. Here’s what.

Artificial intelligence is now part of our lives. The technological innovation of the century, however, divides experts and scientists, who discuss the ability of machines to use cognitive abilities typical of humans. This may involve risks but also benefits for security, business, employment and democracy. So let’s look together at the pros and cons of AI.

Artificial intelligence: experts' concerns

Artificial intelligence is undoubtedly the technological innovation of the century. However, the ability of machines or computer systems to simulate the behavior of human beings is of great concern to digital experts.

First of all, the use of artificial intelligence could lead to the disappearance of many jobs, even if it would create others. There would, however, be a need for adequate training for the unemployed to gain access to it and for there to be a skilled long-term workforce.

Unclear data protection is another major concern of experts towards AI. It can be used, for example, in face recognition devices or for online profiling. In addition, AI is able to gather the information it collects about a person without their knowledge. It could therefore pose a threat to data protection and the right to privacy, as well as to democracy: AI has already been accused of creating "bubbles" on the net, because instead of creating an open environment for multi-voice debate, inclusive and accessible, presents the content based on the content with which the user has interacted in the past,

There is also risk of scams. Artificial intelligence can also be used to create fake but very realistic images, videos and audios, known as deepfake, which can be used to cheat, but also ruin reputation and question confidence in decision-making. All this could polarize public debate and lead to the manipulation of elections.

Transparency is also a concern. Inequalities in access to information could be exploited to the detriment of users. For example, a service provider, relying on a person’s online behavior or other data used without their knowledge, can predict how much that person is willing to pay for a service or political campaign can know which message to send them. In addition, it may not be clear to you whether you are interacting with a person or an artificial intelligence system.

Artificial intelligence applications also come into contact or are integrated into the human body.  If poorly designed, misused or hacked can be dangerous.

Finally, an unregulated use of artificial intelligence in armaments could lead to a loss of control over destructive weapons.

For all these reasons, several academics and business leaders have called on the scientific community to stop the project to improve AI research.

The business world and part of the scientific community, the least innovative and opposed to the project "Artificial Intelligence", has decided to stem, through some initiatives, a work, according to them, extremely dangerous.

The Italian Privacy Authority has launched a measure aimed at blocking ChatGPT in our country, the program developed by OpenAI that is part of the GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) models and machine learning based to optimize conversation or interaction between users.

The benefits of AI

While concerns appear legitimate, the advantages of using artificial intelligence properly cannot be ignored. Indeed, this technological innovation has already revolutionised every area of human existence.

The world of the automobile, medicine or agriculture are just some of the sectors that already benefit from the advantages of artificial intelligence.

Improving research on artificial intelligence could mean better healthcare in the future, safer cars and other transport systems, and also more cost-effective, more durable, tailor-made products and services. AI can also facilitate access to information, education and training, and prevent misinformation and cyber-attacks, helping to strengthen democracy. Moreover, with the possibility of handing over the most dangerous work to robots, this innovation can help make the workplace safer.

Still on the labour front, it must be considered that the growth of the artificial intelligence industries would offer new jobs.

In the future, artificial intelligence can also be used in crime prevention and as a support in criminal justice, because it would allow large volumes of data to be processed more quickly, to assess more accurately the risks of escape of prisoners, predict and prevent terrorist crimes and attacks. Currently, AI is already used by online platforms to detect and respond to illegal or inappropriate online practices.

Finally, in the military field, artificial intelligence could be used for defense and attack strategies in case of cybercrimes or to attack key targets in the cyber fight.
